"We arrived at 9:00 sharp to avoid the crowd, and it was a good idea. The gallery over the Cher is absolutely spectacular, especially the photo from the opposite bank. The atmosphere is calm and the light is magnificent in the early morning. The Green Cabinet is a quiet gem. A perfect visit."

"A Renaissance gem. We loved The Guardroom with its 16th-century Flemish tapestries. The staff is very welcoming. For children, the maze was a big plus; they had a blast without being disturbed. The view over the bridge is unforgettable. I highly recommend this exceptional site."

"Beautiful castle, but it was crowded around noon. We waited 40 minutes for the entry and the audio guide. The gallery over the Cher remains the highlight, even with the crowds. We had planned The Orangery for lunch, but seats were full. You should book in advance. The overall visit is still very beautiful."

"As an Englishman, I am amazed by this architecture. The fact that the bridge over the Cher was built by Diane de Poitiers is fascinating. We took the guided tour by the Tourist Office, which was excellent for understanding the intrigues. The gardens are impeccable. A heritage largely unknown to British tourists, absolutely to be discovered."

"Very beautiful site, but the price of 19 € per person is a bit steep for a basic ticket. We chose the 24 € audio guide, which really enriches the visit. The Flower Garden is an unknown and charming spot, less crowded than the gallery. It is better to arrive early, as the advice says, to enjoy the light on the water."

"We were alone for this getaway, and I loved the tranquility of the late hours. The harmonious perspective of the Renaissance Gardens is perfect for photography. I took the time to wander through the maze, a welcome playful break. The atmosphere of a family home is felt. A contemplative and history-rich experience."

"The story of the rescue by Louise Dupin during the Revolution impressed me. The Guardroom is impressive; one feels the weight of history. It is a bit expensive, but the entry ticket includes access to the gardens. The queues for the audio guide were heavy, but the content is worth it. A first-rate cultural visit."

"The contrast between the rigor of the Renaissance Gardens and the nature of The Flower Garden is magnificent. We were able to see ancient vegetables and edible flowers. The castle is well maintained by the Menier family. The view from the opposite bank of the unique two-story bridge is an absolute must. We leave with many memories."

"A 'must-see' according to the guides, and rightly so. However, the wait for The Orangery exceeded 30 minutes despite a reservation. The food is okay but not exceptional. On the other hand, the gallery over the Cher and The Green Cabinet are true marvels. You should avoid peak hours to fully enjoy the site. - author: Lucas G., location: Brussels"

"We came as a family, and the children loved the maze. The castle itself is sumptuous, especially The Guardroom with its frescoes. The Renaissance architecture is very different from what we see in Paris. The light on the Cher at sunset was a magnificent bonus. A well-filled and very positive day."

"I was surprised by the diversity of spaces. The gallery over the Cher is iconic, but The Flower Garden is an underrated asset that adds a touch of softness. The staff explains well the history of Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Medici. The guided tour adds a precious dimension. A lively and well-managed place."

"The castle is magnificent, but you have to be patient for the entry, especially with the tourist buses. We had a 15-minute wait. The Green Cabinet is an intimate small gem that is truly appreciated. The view of the bridge from the opposite bank is unforgettable. It is a bit crowded, but the experience remains very positive. I strongly recommend this getaway in the Loire Valley."

Chenonceau Castle, a true icon of the Val de Loire, captivates with its unique history linked to the women who managed it. From Katherine Briçonnet to Louise Dupin, each owner left their mark on this suspended residence. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2017, it attracts nearly 900,000 visitors each year to admire its majestic bridge and remarkable art collections. Its private estate has belonged to the Menier family since 1913.
History of the Castle of Ladies
It all begins with KatherineBriçonnet, who decides to replace the old medieval fortress with a more elegant residence between 1513 and 1521. She lays the foundations for what will become a masterpiece of French Renaissance architecture on the banks of the Cher, thus marking the beginning of a major architectural transformation. This ambitious project already integrates the first Italian elements that will characterize the unique style of this Touraine royal residence.
Diane de Poitiers subsequently receives the estate as a gift from HenriII and adds her personal touch. Between 1556 and 1559, she builds the famous bridge connecting the two banks, extending the existing main building and creating the iconic silhouette we know today thanks to this constructive boldness.
After the king's death, Catherine de' Medici takes over the castle and adds two superimposed galleries above the bridge to assert her own power. Later, during the Revolution, Louise Dupin saves the building by serving as a refuge for revolutionary troops, thus avoiding its total destruction and preserving this exceptional heritage for future generations through her courage and diplomacy with the local authorities. She then transforms the site into a sanatorium.
What to see during your visit
The main gallery offers an unobstructed view of the Cher and the meticulously maintained French gardens. You can admire 16th-century Flemish tapestries as well as paintings by Italian and French masters, testifying to the refined taste of former owners and their considerable cultural influence on the era, notably that of Catherine de' Medici who enriched the collections. The park was classified by decree on November 7, 1962.
TheRenaissance gardens constitute a major green space of the estate, including the flower kitchen garden and the plant labyrinth. These spaces allow you to stroll away from the main crowds while discovering horticultural techniques of the time, offering a peaceful and immersive break in a natural setting beautifully restored by the current Menier family.
Don't forget to cross the bridge to the opposite bank to capture the perfect photo of the castle reflected in the water. This reverse perspective reveals the full architectural beauty of the ensemble, highlighting the symmetry of the galleries and the harmonious integration of the building into its riverine environment, a key element of the visual identity of Chenonceau, classified as a historical monument as early as 1840.
Practical tips for visiting
It is recommended to arrive at opening time to enjoy ideal lighting and an absence of crowds. The first rays of sunlight illuminate the white facades and the waters of the Cher, creating exceptional photographic conditions that many visitors regret not capturing by arriving too late in the day.
Allow approximately two hours to explore the castle and its gardens, plus more if you wish to lunch at the L'Orangerie restaurant. This latter offers refined cuisine with a direct view of the river, allowing you to extend the sensory experience of the site without leaving the premises, while enjoying service adapted to the needs of international tourists.
To avoid crowds, prefer off-peak hours in the early morning or late afternoon, as well as seasons outside school holidays. The site remains open all year round but hours may vary slightly in winter, so it is essential to check exact availability before your departure to optimize your visit schedule. Book your tickets online to guarantee access.
